Austria: Pænda – Limits

Austria's song, Limits, by Pænda has finally reached YouTube after being premiered on radio. This is quite an unconventional song for Eurovision and I can understand the reported reluctance of the selection panel put their faith in it. It is so delicate and dainty that it could easily fall between the cracks in semi-final 2. It's a wonderful background Spotify track, though I'm not sure it makes a great Contest song. That will essentially depend on how the broadcaster, ORF, stages Pænda's song. I do think they need to present this to be light and airy with pastel hues and an…

This is quite an unconventional song for Eurovision and I can understand the reported reluctance of the selection panel put their faith in it. It is so delicate and dainty that it could easily fall between the cracks in semi-final 2. It’s a wonderful background Spotify track, though I’m not sure it makes a great Contest song. That will essentially depend on how the broadcaster, ORF, stages Pænda’s song.

I do think they need to present this to be light and airy with pastel hues and an almost dreamy soft-focus brightness. The music video is far too dark and gloomy, and Pænda isn’t great at selling the song.

The juries will certainly like this more than the televote; however, Limits is very borderline when assessing the field in semi-final 2.

  1. A very competent entry but I just don’t see what’s there for a jury to vote for and I definitely don’t see what a televote will see in this. Pretty clear NQ for me and a very disappointing effort from Austria, almost feels like Cesar almost winning last year scared the shit out of them.

  2. Limits is a decent well sung song. It is a jury track and in semi 2 there are better modern ballads (Netherlands and probably Russia) that the juries will give their support to.

The way semi 2 is shaping up with a strong second half, Austria maybe be competing for one of only four first half qualifying berths. I’m not confident they’ll make it.

The best thing for Austria is that they are in the weaker semi (I don’t understand anyone who says semi 2 is stronger), and that this will likely be top 5 with the juries. But it may just be too much in the background to qualify, especially being in the first half.

  4. I tend to remind you that you underestimate Austria every year :-). However I agree with your review that this is a borderline qualifier. With a competent performance, the right staging, mood of the audience and a good slot in the running order it can go far, it can however also remain stuck in the semifinals.
Anyway it definitely is not a disappointing effort from Austria, I prefer if some risk is taken by giving the stage to a singer-songwriter over creating the perfect Eurovision song by copying what has been successful in the past.

    • Yeah but those years Austria send something upbeat that can score well on the jury and decently on the televote and get through. This year it just doesn’t have either of those and I think this needs an amazing performance to get through as it’s getting nothing in the televote and would need to get top 5 in the Jury to counter this which from what I can see I struggle to see happening, to score high with juries you usually need to be upbeat or if you go down this route be really strong, Austria does neither. I need to see running order before I call of but it’s probably the weakest amber in the half and possibly the semi.

  5. Wow guys? For those who love Kate Bush, this is as close as it can get. It’s like everything Australia wants to be, but fails to do by adding so many more cheesy popera elements to it. I think this is absolutely a gem. Pænda has wonderful high-pitched vocals. And an entry like this begs for an esotheric staging, with blue and white linnen colors. As bright as possible. Keep this simple, like in the videoclip. Just execute one frontal camera shot showing off the singer and how she immerges herself in this song.

Televoting bait? Absolutely not. But I think this could get a very decent jury score. And personally that will help it into the Final.

  6. Anyone else thinks this entry is being underestimated this year? Since the Austrian delegation has proven they actually can stage songs (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), I can envision a very haunting, magic staging for this entry. Vocally, Paenda is really unique in this contest. Her high-pitched vocals are crisp and clear.

Not saying that this is a potential TOP 10 candidate. Far from it. But I think juries could really appreciate this. It’s a unique song in the contest, to say the least.
