Croatia: Roko – The Dream

Returning with their Dora selection show, Croatia voted to send Roko to Tel Aviv with The Dream. If this is what angel song sounds like, I want no part of it. I find myself wishing for a Bartleby type exploding head downfall [see Dogma]. If there is a God then this dull, plodding early-noughties shout-fest should be left in the semis. Self harm might be the only solution when Roko rehearses for the eighth time in Tel Aviv.

  1. It’s hard to imagine there was a time when Croatia sent great songs year after year. This struggles with Montenegro and Slovenia to be the most hopeless one in the region.

  2. On the plus side The Dream is well sung and has a big rousing chorus. The negative is that it is a dated cheese-fest, and Eurovision juries don’t tend to reward this kind of thing however well sung.

But then I look at the composer and I remember Jacques turned up at Eurovision a couple of years ago with a similarly dated vomit-inducing offering and transformed it with gloriously kitschy staging. The ‘angel wings’ (which looked like they had been improvised from car seat covers) probably give a pointer as to where this is heading staging-wise.

The best bit of the song was the last minute in Croat. This gave the impression that Roko was singing an authentic Balkan ballad rather than the tasteless piece of crap that it is. This might help pull in some regional televotes, although Croatia are not helped in this respect by being in Semi-Two.

While the obvious call at this stage is to say Non-Qualifier, for the reasons given I think it would be dangerous to rule out qualification, particularly if they come with the right staging.

  3. Oh dear……

    Time to reappraise the UK!

  4. Juries will eat this alive, will do better with the televote but I don’t see how this could qualify. Because it’s so crazy live I expect it to be far away from Russia or Netherlands, if they deliver, similar spot to Franka last year and they will be remembered for all the wrong reasons when the lines open.
