Georgia: Iriao – Sheni Gulistvis

Georgia becomes the last nation to play their hand for Eurovision. Iriao will perform Sheni Gulistvis in the second half of semi-final 2. The last review of the year, and based on what I've heard so far, I'm going to keep things brief. Sheni Gulistvis is a nice enough song, but it's the sort of entry that will be buried in the running order. Croatia competed with a similar sounding song back in 2013 and finished 13th in a 16-way semi-final. Unlike Klapa S Mora, Sheni Gulistvis doesn't really go anywhere and fails to build into the sort of crescendo…
Song Appeal
Vocal Strength
Staging Potential
Likely Televote Appeal
Likely Jury Appeal

No thanks

Georgia are short of a few allies to get close enough to the approximate 100-point qualification threshold.

Georgia becomes the last nation to play their hand for Eurovision. Iriao will perform Sheni Gulistvis in the second half of semi-final 2.

The last review of the year, and based on what I’ve heard so far, I’m going to keep things brief.

Sheni Gulistvis is a nice enough song, but it’s the sort of entry that will be buried in the running order. Croatia competed with a similar sounding song back in 2013 and finished 13th in a 16-way semi-final. Unlike Klapa S Mora, Sheni Gulistvis doesn’t really go anywhere and fails to build into the sort of crescendo required to pull in support from juries and non-Eastern viewers. With more oomph it may stand a chance!

Georgia’s qualification success rate is a touch over 60% since 2010. Semi-2 is wide open in the second half and Georgia could stand out amongst the plastic pop and dull wallpaper songs. I tend to favour non-qualification right now for the basic reason that even the plastic pop and wallpaper songs have more to offer at this point, while also recognising that Georgia are short of a few allies to get close enough to the approximate 100-point qualification threshold.

Can Georgia earn enough support to escape the semi-final?

  1. I honestly like Iceland better. Damn it! The second half of SF2 is going to be really lame.

  2. I really don’t know what to make of this. I can’t even identify the genre. Maybe it’s some bold original, masterpiece of authentic ‘real’ music, that will take Eurovision by storm, like Salvador last year.

But I suspect most people hearing this for the first time will have it down as a semi final no-hoper.

  3. This is strange.

  4. This is very beautiful, a nice balance of harmonies and feel-good finale. When in 60s the Uk household was introduced to avocados, your regular John had no clue what to do with it. But it gained its market.

So this delicate performance is a slightly more exotic fruit for some, but professional jury should appreciate it. And so will it’s neighbouring televote who was brought up with appreciation for avocados from childhood. This might well qualify

  5. It won’t win, but I do kind of love it. And for the sake of diversity and sending established artists with their own sound, I love that it’s there. The quality of their vocals is beyond reproach, and I do find this much more gently-challenging-art and a lot less opening-credits-of-a-daytime-soap-opera than Mizerja.
My feeling after four listens is that I still can’t remember a single word or hum a single line, but I remember listening to it made me feel really good. It’s like being submerged in a warm bath. And frankly, on the night that alone would make me vote for a song.

In short, I have no idea if it’ll qualify, but I love that it’s there, and the final would be a better place with Georgia in it.

  6. NQ all over it. Completely unmemorable after multiple listens.
