Switzerland: Zibbz – Stones

Switzerland know how to keep things brief. I like it! Six acts competed for the chance to represent the nation in Lisbon, but the juries and public voted Zibbz as their Eurovision 2018 representative with the song Stones. Stones is a fine choice for Switzerland in what was a much improved national final standard. Both radio friendly and reasonably authentic, Stones is the sort of song capable of picking up jury support. In fact it did well to top the jury score from slot 1. Semi-final 1 is extremely competitive, and even though no semi-final is friendly for Switzerland, it could…
Song Appeal
Vocal Strength
Staging Potential
Likely Televote Appeal
Likely Jury Appeal

Rocked

It could be Switzerland's best chance to qualify since 2014.

Corinne can sound a tad horse towards the backend of the song, but she more than makes up for any slight croaks in the way she confidently sells Stones down the camera. It is a tight performance and a good base to build from.

  • Easier semi to qualify from
  • Strong performer with good image
  • Authentic song
  • Not massively distinctive
  • Needs a favourable running order slot

Will Switzerland be throwing stones into the Eurovision final?

  1. For me this is a package that desperately needs a strong staging to boost the song’s chances. As it stand I think it would finish like 13th in the semi with borderline jury support but not much televote support. With good staging could see this squeeze through but will be touch and go regardless.

  2. Switzerland made the right choice. This sounds very modern and upbeat and I really liked the female singer’s look. Stones performed well with the international juries despite some stiff competition and I think it will do so again in Lisbon. Televote less so – being Switzerland, but second half of Semi 1 is not a bad place to be. So, I can see this qualifying for the Saturday night – unless, that is, the Swiss Broadcaster makes her walk down a spiral staircase in a bright yellow ball gown!

    • You forgot the Barbie pink piano to complete the picture 🙂 though blue curls and smoke coming out of the singer’s bra is a package to beat as well. In a nut shell, full confidence in Swiss staging skill -set

  3. While it’s a fine song, Eurovision audiences have a history of punishing “angry” women with borderline songs, Mei Finegold, Amandine, Tirana Park, Poli (first time), Nina Zili, Emma Marrone etc. Nina Subletti is a an exception. But it still seems like a bad choice.

Maybe the Swiss aren’t lame enough to not vote for a song because the woman singing isn’t passive enough?

      • You can complain all you want, but I’m here to make money. And unfortunately most is based on prior trends.

You imply that I’m offensive but no one has proven me wrong.

While some may have done “ok” they have never reached their potential.

    • You’re casting that net a bit wide there, Jala.

    • Jala, I confess my fondness for ‘angry women’ has cost me in the past (Triana Park 2017 – Gav, I should have heeded your warning there!) but I don’t think Corinne falls into the same category at all. Her image is modern and stylish and fits the song perfectly. Surely our ESC female vocalists don’t all have to wear ball gowns to make them voteable.

  4. I think the staging is fine as it is. Maybe a third triangle on stage for backing singers? This is pretty much ready to go and the Swiss have played the best card they were dealt. The main thing they need to tighten up is the live vocal and just watch that the camera doesn’t point at a triangle bar obscuring her face. That was a bit of a TV schoolboy error.

    • Ben, I was thinking along the same lines for the staging. Have all the backing singers as band members each ‘playing’ there own instrument in their own triangle. Maybe the triangles flash on and off at certain points – like when the backing singers join in. I’m going to stop now before I get carried away!

  5. Good choice by Switzerland, I quite like this one and Sebalter aside it’s their best effort in ages but it’s still borderline to qualify. There’s still consistent qualifiers in semi one – Azerbaijan, Armenia, Greece (although Greece are not looking strong at all) as well as country’s showing intent to do well – Bulgaria, Finland, Cyprus- and Belgium slot somewhere in between now. I’d guess somewhere around 9th-15th.

    • Finland have failed to qualify 3 years in a row, they aren’t much better than Switzerland (they aren’t fullstop)

      • I would be quite surprised to see Saara Aalto fail to qualify with the team she’s got now.

        • What a Karaoke singer who couldn’t win a single tv show she was on or get major deal is a certain qualifier…dont believe in the fan hype, there are at least 2 other women internal picked in that semi that are more qualified for hype than her.

Don’t want to go off topic here and start a war but Finland really aren’t anything special this year, there is nothing special about Saara at all and its just hype because she was a foreigner on a British TV show. I don’t want to continue the conversation until there is a page for it as ill likely get an infraction for going too much off topic so ill leave it here for now.

  6. Didn’t follow their NF. Was she the favorite to win?

  7. Another Euro-garbage like Mikolas Josef – Lie To Me
