Poland: Kasia Moś – Flashlight

There was no Margaret shaped fan magnet this year, so the Polish national final wasn't at the top of everyone's list to watch. Kasia Moś topped the jury vote and finished second on the televote and will now represent Poland at Eurovision 2017 in May. Let me cut to the chase by stating Flashlight is incredibly generic. Kasia and the two other listed writers seem at pains to admit it and have instead their song up as faux dramatic ballad. They should accept that lyrics like: "Fire, like a burning desire" or "Like a bullet from a gun" belong in the realms of chav-dance acts like Cascada…
Song Appeal
Vocal Strength
Staging Potential
Likely Televote Appeal
Likely Jury Appeal
Cohesiveness of Package

Dim

If Poland qualify, it'll be in 9th or 10th and because most of the other songs were just as vapid and undeserving.

Let me cut to the chase by stating Flashlight is incredibly generic. Kasia and the two other listed writers seem at pains to admit it and have instead their song up as faux dramatic ballad. They should accept that lyrics like: “Fire, like a burning desire” or “Like a bullet from a gun” belong in the realms of chav-dance acts like Cascada or Scooter. Flashlight should be this year’s trashy dance song.

As has already been mentioned in the comments, there is no melody to guide listeners, so Kasia’s bad karaoke-singer habits are exposed as she shouts and grunts her way through the meaningless lyrics. If Michał Szpak only scored 20-points from juries in last year’s semi-final, surely Kasia scores less? And as much as Michał’s song grated on me, he at least had a solid vocal and stage presence. Kasia has neither.

If Poland qualify, it’ll be in 9th or 10th and because most of the other songs were just as vapid and undeserving.

Can Poland motivate their diaspora again?

  1. I heard there was a song in this NF that was accused of plagiarism and I’m guessing this is the song is it? Otherwise your rating of 1 out of 5 for the jury seems a tad harsh imo.

    • It’s no better than last year’s song, which was slated by the juries. Plus, she can’t sing the big notes without grunting like a second rate social club singer. She also drifts off key. And like Ben say’s, there’s no tune.

      • Wasn’t the immense jury hate last year due to the painful datedness of the song, though? It’s hard to compare them, and this may very well be slaughtered by juries, too. But then it’s for different reasons, imo.

      • I think there is something there for juries to like but like you said it has no chorus which will hold it back with the jury, a song from last year that its comparable to is Norway and where Norway finished in the jury in the semi (12th) is where i’d expect this to finish if its staged we’ll….granted unlike Norway this is guaranteed a strong tele vote for obvious reasons.

        • Poland failed to qualify 2009-2011, so the televote isn’t guaranteed.

          • But since they have come back I dont know what TVP have done but the diaspora have got right behind the Polish entry, the high tele vote score’s they have got since they returned are higher than Poland entries pre 2011 could even dream of. Granted this year I feel they are lacking for friend’s than usual so maybe the could be in slightly more danger of NQ but I can’t see it happening but it will do absolutely nothing in the final

          • You know what, I’ve just had a good look at there semi final and I think they could be in a little bit of bother, I was looking for obvious friend’s and I’m really struggling to find some, Only UK,Italy,CR possibly Latvia there to vote for them, Poland can count themselves lucky that they have a second half draw.

          • It’s because they sent songs that mobilised the Polish diaspora. Should it qualify, I think this is more on a par with 2015 in terms of result.

          • I’m certain it will be 20-27 in the final if it does qualify, 2016 & 2014 mobilised the diaspora but I’m not sure how 2015 would have, her high tele vote might have been as much about sympathy + the pimp slot rather than just the song.

          • Good luck with the 27th place 😂

In the semi final the following Polish televote rankings happened:

            Australia – 9th
            Cyprus – 3rd
            Czech – 6th
            Germany – 1st
            Iceland – 4th
            Ireland – 2nd
            Israel – 15th
            Italy – 1st
            Latvia – 8th
            Lithuania – 3rd
            Malta – 3rd
            Norway – 3rd
            Portugal – 6th
            Slovenia – 8th
            Sweden – 3rd
            Switzerland – 6th
            Uk – 2nd

Do some basic research and you’ll find some correlations https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_diaspora

          • Well thanks to Spain and Germany that probably wasnt going to happen anyway, i’d say something in the low twenties like 20-22 is most likely granted. I guess your sort of right but why was it when Monika wasnt in the pimp slot (alas the final) she crashed in the tele vote yet the other didn’t?

          • Gav, comparisons with 2009 -2011 may not be the most relevant as the new voting system introduced in 2016 broke the constraining effect juries had on a country’s televote. Now the televote flies free. As you put it following Michal Szpak’s huge televote last year, Poland could defecate on the stage and still come top 10.

Judging by the comments here concerning Flashlight, maybe they just have, although I think some of the criticisms are a tad harsh. For me Kasia has a good voice and sings in tune, although there is something off-putting about her performance which could harm her chances.

How well Flashlight will do will depend largely on the televote it can muster. The question you rightly pose is whether in that regard it is akin to 2016 or Monika in 2015. In my view the answer probably lies somewhere in between.

In the semi Poland can probably muster around 50 cheap televote points from diaspora support. Add that to 20 jury points max and that still leaves it 30-40 points short of what it needs to qualify. So, surprisingly I find myself in agreement with you that non- qualification is a real possibility.

If it does make the final, there may be 100 cheap diaspora televote points and say 10 jury points available, leaving it to find around another 40 televote points to make the top 10. Probably too big an ask for this song.

I reckon that under the new system Monika would have only mustered 47 televote points. Around 80 points in all may be needed to escape the bottom 5, so if Flashlight does go down as badly as In the Name of Love, a bottom 5 finish is not out of the question.

          • “Gav, comparisons with 2009 -2011 may not be the most relevant as the new voting system introduced in 2016 broke the constraining effect juries had on a country’s televote. ”

Yes it was a combined vote back then, but you can still see the effect of the televote on the split result charts.

  2. Still Cathal, I think we have another potential non-qualifier here. The Polish final was as dire as the Maltese one. Except for the better streaming quality of the show.

    • Song wise it is a potential non qualifier and then you see that it’s Poland and then you realise it really isn’t unless she is bad on the night.

  3. She’s got a great voice but the song’s a big dramatic nothing. There’s no tune.

  4. I fear for this years final seeing the rubbish being selected. This is a nothing song.Iv noticed more and more countries the last few years who think they have a jury song, but the juries have moved on from such dross years ago.
Poland have a big music scene. One year they will challenge the win. This year they need to hope they dont qualify so people dont have to suffer this in the final.Horrible.Only votes will be diaspora, and even they might not bother.

    • I was optimistic for this year but last night was a big kick in the balls for this year’s contest I feel, 3 song’s that are nothing really special.
