The semi-final allocation draw for Eurovision 2017 has just taken place in Kiev in a more politicised event than expected. As ever, the producer-decided running order should be published in April.

  1. I didn’t think Ireland’s draw could get worse after the past few years but somehow it has, I had 4 request’s and we get 0… no UK,no SH draw, bigger semi, for 100% qualifiers. Obviously it will come down to our song before we can be sure of our fate but it will need to be a bloody good one.

    • To be fair Cathal, we’re in with quite a few countries with poor qualification records, namely Israel, San Marino, Macedonia, the Swiss and a few others. Could be a lot worse. I agree though that the song has to be a step up on recent efforts if we’re to make it.

      • Since I wrote this comment I’ve come around realised that what you say is completely true, we will need our best entry since Lipstick to get through.

      • @black n Blue-A small reminder:2015 & 2016 both Ireland and Israel were in the same semi. In both cases Israel qualified and Ireland didn’t. And in those 2 years Israel has a better song and a better staging than the Irish song.

I’ll wait for the singer and the song before I make any judgement on one county chance to qualify

  2. If Estonia end up picking who we think they’re going to pick *cough Kerli cough*, then we can assume that’s the Semi 2 closer sorted, no?

  3. Greece couldnt buy a better place.Belgium might be in big trouble.Western leaning semi, but the ones who vote for them arent there.

  4. Also on Russia, I wouldn’t say they are lonely (Belarus,Ukraine unless the jury tank it,Estonia,Lithuania,Israel) plus its Russia so the song will probably be really strong so it should get enough vote’s from other place’s to be able to qualify however, if the song isn’t good they could be in trouble as I would be surprised that because we are in the Ukraine that they decide to shaft Russia and give them the slot of death.

    • Russia have from my count, the Ukraine/ Lithuania/ Estonia public, Belarus both counts and a little Israeli help. Maybe 50+ points in the bank? Won’t be enough on its own to win the semi or get top 3 but definitely enough to qualify unless they are 2011 poor and in a terrible slot.

    • Looking through the draw I’m starting to think another 100% country could be in danger (Romania). No Spain,Italy,Moldova, first half draw and when you consider they have sent shite since 2012 maybe this could be the year they miss out.

  5. Is that also 4/4 first half draws for Australia now too. Competitive semi with some strong track records… Surely can’t receive a draw as good as they have the other times…
They should be ok but need to be careful. Might be wise to avoid a ballad like they did in 2015 again. Don’t want to get lost in a slow tempo first half.

  6. At first glance, I was a bit disappointed with The Netherlands being in the first half again, and also without Belgium, but in the bigger semi. But that 19th country is San Marino and there are quite a few countries that are lacking neighbour or diaspora voting and only qualify with a decent song. Although I don’t expect much of the Dutch entry this year, I wouldn’t say we can blame it on an unfortunate draw.

  7. (Last post from me on this article baring replies)

In the end we need to remember that good song’s usually qualify and what make’s semi 2 so interesting is not a single song has been chosen yet and on the face of it the only countries that are assured of qualifying imo are Romania,Russia,Lithuania and after that its mainly down to the song and running order.

  8. Iceland will Q

  9. Jesus, just now noticed how horribly lonely Latvia is in the first semi. Oh boy.

  10. My prediction for the second semi is:

    FYR Macedonia ( not sure)
    Malta ( will make it 🙂 )
    Netherlands (out)
    Serbia ( 100% final)
Denmark ( 100% final maybe semi winner)
    Russia ( 100% final )
    Romania ( final)
    Hungary (final)
    Austria ( 100% out)
    Ireland (out)
    Switzerland ( out)
    Estonia ( 100% final)
    Israel (out)
Bulgaria ( 100% final maybe semi winner)
San Marino ( last of the semi)
    Lithuania ( not sure)
    Croatia (not sure)
    Norway (not sure)
    Belarus (not sure)

5 songs left for the last two places, do you agree?

  11. About the first semi the nine qualifiers will be Finland, Portugal, Sweeden, Belgium, Azerbaijan (not sure), Australia, Armenia, Greece, Poland. The 10th qualifier will shock everyone, It is going to be Slovenia. Latvia will do terribly if the presentation and staging is the same with the national final, might come last in the semi.
