Cohesiveness of Package
If this song was entered in 2013, Azerbaijan would almost certainly be top-5 in the odds
Azerbaijan have presented Samra with the song, Miracle, as their Eurovision package for Stockholm. They’ll be hoping Samra can perform a miracle and overturn their recent run of bad form, which is mostly down to them playing by the book.
Last year Azerbaijan qualified in 10th place with just a 10-point margin to 11th-placed Malta. The days of Azerbaijan being a top-10 banker are long gone after the 2013 power-voting controversy, and even though the briefcases still supposedly change hands, we now know Azerbaijan are running on their base vote.
This year, Azerbaijan are among friends in semi-final 1 and they’ve sent a more appealing western-sounding song with a memorable, if not slightly overused hook. Their weakness comes in the shape of Samra, and the videos posted in the comments section suggest earplugs might be in order at May’s rehearsals. However, it’s also worth remembering that previous Azeri singers have been subject to similarly poor videos only to surprise at Eurovision, so it’s worth waiting until the pre-Contest concerts before writing her off.
Miracle isn’t a Drip-Drop, which is arguably Azerbaijan’s best song to date, but there are high quality elements: notably the verses that have a warm, classy feel with those bright piano flourishes. The chorus is a tad abrupt, but the piano is there again to ease in the second verse. There isn’t a conventional bridge, and instead, the song repeats the chorus for the entire third minute. Remarkably, it doesn’t get boring, so as a package, Miracle is perhaps the strongest of this year’s Sia-influenced songs.
If this song was entered in 2013, Azerbaijan would almost certainly be top-5 in the odds. Until we know if Samra can be trusted with a microphone, the 40/1 currently available looks about right. If she proves to be much better than those unflattering videos suggest, then Azerbaijan could be back in the game.
Are Azerbaijan destined for another lean year?
