Germany: Jamie-Lee Kriewitz – Ghost

Germany simplified their national final this year, and as a result, they got the winner they wanted. Jamie-Lee Kriewitz competed in a 3-way super final against Avantasia and Alex Diehl and will now travel to Stockholm with the song Ghost. At the time of writing, Ghost is one of the better, higher quality songs selected to date. It's a sophisticated, synthpop ballad aiming for this year's purist vote, but I think it falls well short of being a potential winner for a number of reasons. When watching the original studio version, the determination on Jamie-Lee's face during the higher notes was…
Song Appeal
Vocal Strength
Staging Potential
Likely Televote Appeal
Likely Jury Appeal
Cohesiveness of Package

By virtue of finishing last with nil-point in 2015, Germany is guaranteed a better result.

At the time of writing, Ghost is one of the better, higher quality songs selected to date. It’s a sophisticated, synthpop ballad aiming for this year’s purist vote, but I think it falls well short of being a potential winner for a number of reasons.

When watching the original studio version, the determination on Jamie-Lee’s face during the higher notes was quite endearing; she was really trying and that drew viewers into her song. Ghost may lack a big moment, but up until now, Jamie-Lee was the song’s main selling point.

The national final lost that feeling of intimacy and credibility in what will no doubt see Jamie-Lee being chalked up as an early favourite for the Barbara Dex award. The manga/lolita outfit detracted from what was meant to be a serious, authentic performance. If this outfit travels to Eurovision, Jamie-Lee will polarise opinion, and there’s only so many manga fans or Jimmy Saviles out there willing to vote for this, though the latter maybe a little preoccupied with other things to remember voting.

Going to Stockholm, Jamie-Lee needs to dump her 5-year old shopping companion and instead take her mum. I’d also like to see similar, intimate camera work as used in the studio video, as there’s a subtle, geeky, Lena-like vulnerability to exploit. Then as the song progresses, the staging would get brighter and our Lena mark-II could get more involved in the song and rhythm.

Ghost is very much a work-in-progress that has the potential to do well. By virtue of finishing last with nil-points in 2015, Germany is guaranteed a better result. My guess at this point is that they’ll finish around the top-10 mark; maybe less if the manga outfit stays.

Are Germany contenders this year?

  1. It’s alright but nothing special, Seems to be hyped by the fans for whatever reasons that are oblivious to me atleast. She is a great talent voice of Germany winner and eurovision contestant at the age of 17, pretty crazy!

I can’t see this making the left hand side of the scoreboard sadly unless her age is hyped up by the commentator but should do a hell of a lot better than Ann Sophie managed. Prediction 19-21 something like that at this stage.

  2. So mediocre, I don’t get the fan hype. There’s absolutely no way it will stand out in a field of 26 songs and I really don’t see people picking up the phone for this.
I’ll wait for the rehearsal in may, but unless they somehow pull off some amazing staging, I’ll be backing Germany for last place, if there’s any value at that point.

  3. Good song and good singer. Juries should go for it. One of my bigger greens. Must say I was disappointed with the staging. Top 10 right now for me based on that . staging needs to change for it to have a chance of contending.

  4. Top 10 for Germany, Western juries will go for this heavily and it’s contemporary enough to do very well on the televote too. Will all depend on the draw for this one though, too early and it could get forgotten, but if it is put late enough I wouldn’t rule out top 5 based on the standard we’ve seen so far.

  5. Probably the best choice from the lot. I like Ghost, and I think Jamie-Lee is very well suited to it. But as for the live package there’s too many things wrong with this. Nowhere near enough close up shots, and as soon as the camera was stuck in front of her face, she’d look the other way. A new wardrobe would help too. I’m not seeing anything higher than a mid-table finish if the production doesn’t improve.

  6. If she sorts out her outfit to match with the song better, I think the cohesiveness of the package would be so much more and help her a lot. Generally speaking though, I do like the song and is one of my favourites that has so far been confirmed, although I know that’s not hard…

  7. Finally a decent confirmed entry. Think this is pretty high quality compared to most this year, Jamie has her own usp of cute manga pixie dream girl and the song while a little one paced is very current and catchy. Sets the standard out of the entries we have so far for me

  8. Staging needs a lot of work. The delegation need a much tighter package and a more innocent look as well. The costume is a big no.Jamie also needs to work on the harmonies and connect with the backing singers better.Im not sure if she missed lines into some harmonies of if the structure needs changing.
Id probably go for something much more simple with just dry ice and lighting given i think the song itself is strong relative to what we have selected so far and in the selection shows we know about.

  9. I have a bad feeling in a field of 26 songs, this will be rather anonymous, and the Harajuku Girl look she’s got going will make the audience not take her song seriously.

It’s looking like another bottom 5 for them I think.

  10. It’s a good, contemporary song that, if executed perfectly, I’d say 7th or 8th place, but since it was a little bit underwhelming tonight, it’s going to come down entirely to the rehearsals in Stockholm.

  11. It’s nice to read so much optimism about this song, with many people even placing it in the Top 10. I’m a bit worried if the song is suitable to attract enough votes to really do so. Especially in the new system where some countries might easily be 75-100 points ahead, I wonder if this sort of ‘just nice’ song can catch up and get enough points.

  12. Is there such thing as a bet for the lowest scoring auto qualifier? I think this might end up being it.
