A dizzying, disorientating song that struggles to tick the accessibility boxes. A tragic waste of a golden opportunity given the talent we know Emma possesses.
This week, Italy unveiled Emma Marrone as their 2014 Eurovision artist; news we greeted with some excitement.
Today however, RAI confirmed that Emma will perform La Mia Città in Copenhagen; something that excites us much less!
In Emma’s recent back catalogue, we have beautifully written and structured songs like, Amami, L’Amore Non Mi Basta and Sarò Libera. They are all suited to Eurovision thanks to their powerful refrains and impressive build. Why does it seem that La Mia Città was a throw-away track?
My issue is that La Mia Città seems a misguided and somewhat lazy choice for Eurovision; given her most successful songs have a clear structure. La Mia Città totally lacks a discernible structure; it’s just a dizzying, disorientating song that struggles to tick the accessibility boxes.
Emma’s pop-rock style echoes with that of P!nk. If you see her video for Cercavo Amore, the 29 year old could easily be mistaken for her US counterpart. What’s more, Cercavo Amore is another fine example of a song better suited to Eurovision.
DurhamBorn reckons La Mia Città is a great arena song. I accept that Emma will prove popular with the live audience, though I have grave concerns for TV viewers struggling to separate the verses from the chorus, while attempting to decipher the song’s meaning.
The most successful song of this genre would be maNga’s We Could be the same, though even that had a traditional structure and was at least more entertaining.
One might also suggest Amandine Bourgeois’ L’enfer et moi, while much slower, both Amandine and Emma share the same aggressive stage presence.
I don’t like to be unduly hyperbolic when making my pre-Eurovision predictions, but based on the video above, I reckon Italy might fall outside of the top-10 this year. Considering a final of 26 songs, I struggle to find anything remotely accessible for the rest of Europe contained within this song.
Given La Mia Città has already been released in Italy, I don’t envisage any changes. So by the time we get to Copenhagen, the stage designers need to develop a strong visual package to make Italy more cohesive and memorable.
Does Emma’s song tick your accessibility box?
