Italy: Emma Marrone – La Mia Città

Arrivederci!

A dizzying, disorientating song that struggles to tick the accessibility boxes. A tragic waste of a golden opportunity given the talent we know Emma possesses.

This week, Italy unveiled Emma Marrone as their 2014 Eurovision artist; news we greeted with some excitement.

Today however, RAI confirmed that Emma will perform La Mia Città in Copenhagen; something that excites us much less!

In Emma’s recent back catalogue, we have beautifully written and structured songs like, Amami, L’Amore Non Mi Basta and Sarò Libera.  They are all suited to Eurovision thanks to their powerful refrains and impressive build.  Why does it seem that La Mia Città was a throw-away track?

My issue is that La Mia Città seems a misguided and somewhat lazy choice for Eurovision; given her most successful songs have a clear structure.  La Mia Città totally lacks a discernible structure; it’s just a dizzying, disorientating song that struggles to tick the accessibility boxes.

Emma’s pop-rock style echoes with that of P!nk.  If you see her video for Cercavo Amore, the 29 year old could easily be mistaken for her US counterpart.   What’s more, Cercavo Amore is another fine example of a song better suited to Eurovision.

DurhamBorn reckons La Mia Città is a great arena song.  I accept that Emma will prove popular with the live audience, though I have grave concerns for TV viewers struggling to separate the verses from the chorus, while attempting to decipher the song’s meaning.

The most successful song of this genre would be maNga’s We Could be the same, though even that had a traditional structure and was at least more entertaining.

One might also suggest Amandine Bourgeois’ L’enfer et moi, while much slower, both Amandine and Emma share the same aggressive stage presence.

I don’t like to be unduly hyperbolic when making my pre-Eurovision predictions, but based on the video above, I reckon Italy might fall outside of the top-10 this year.  Considering a final of 26 songs, I struggle to find anything remotely accessible for the rest of Europe contained within this song.

Given La Mia Città has already been released in Italy, I don’t envisage any changes.  So by the time we get to Copenhagen, the stage designers need to develop a strong visual package to make Italy more cohesive and memorable.

Does Emma’s song tick your accessibility box?

  1. My excitement levels also fell. I have always loved Italy, but although this is a classsy song, it’s not really catchy and it might intimidate at least one of the two constituencies (juries/televoters).

  2. Im really pleased Emma went for La Mia Città.I saw her perform it back in December on RadioItalia and she blew the crowd away with it.It suits her vocal and it is classy rock.It and her remind me of a modern Suzi Quatro. This is a real song not an ESC by numbers.Quality verses and power.
Its a big stage song.If she has her band on with her as she must it will have the Copenhagen crowd rocking.
I fully expect she will get the highest televote Italy have had since returning.
The jury will surely also reward her.
This ISNT an album song or MP3,,its a song you need to see performed live to get it.

Shes not my favourite Italian artist, but with this song shes a top 6 contender,im 100% certain of that.

I admire her bravery in going for this, and she will be rewarded. Its top class. If this follows a few boring ballads……………………………..anything could happen.

    • As you say, a brilliant arena song, but having watched the video you’re talking about, as at TV viewer, I feel somewhat disappointed. The clarity of the song is lost. I’m not sharing your optimism here.

    • Neither am I. I agree that it’s a well produced song, it works for Emma and the Italian people love it, and she works the crowd, but ESC is a TV show, not a concert. I appreciate real local music coming to ESC very very much indeed, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to do well. This song just kind of passed me by on the very first listen and I don’t think Europe are going to fall head over heels for something they’ll struggle to understand. Tread carefully if you intend on betting on Emma, Durham.

  3. Can’t find a single word in this review that I disagree with.

  4. I can easily see that it might prove to be a very divisive song and entry. Its also capable of performing badly. However i also think it has great potential to do well.Running order will be important of course. The key isnt how many people dont like it,its how many people do.I doubt she will have any competition in the genre and will get a very good televote.
As for betting id agree that right now i wouldnt bet anything on her as its not a winning song.It might be top 10,or some match bets, but i will be looking to be involved in some way.How will depend on the competition.

  5. I don’t see what the meaning of the song has to do with anything since most people can’t speak Italian anyway. I would have preferred a ballad, but this isn’t bad as a pop rock song. I wouldn’t rule out anything at this stage.

  6. New video here. She has a quality TV feed, but still disappoints.

  7. For anyone interested in the San Remo festival here below are the first 7 songs that went through to the final on Saturday.Tonight another 7 big artists will sing 2 songs each and televoters will choose the one each takes to the final on Saturday.

    Video Rai.TV – Sanremo 2014 – Arisa – ‘Controvento’ – Sanremo 2014
    Video Rai.TV – Sanremo 2014 – Frankie Hi-Nrg Mc – ‘Pedala’ – Sanremo 2014
    Video Rai.TV – Sanremo 2014 – Antonella Ruggiero – ‘Da lontano’ – Sanremo 2014
    Video Rai.TV – Sanremo 2014 – Raphael Gualazzi e The Bloody Beetroots – ‘Liberi o no’ – Sanremo 2014
    Video Rai.TV – Sanremo 2014 – Cristiano De Andrè – ‘Il cielo è vuoto’ – Sanremo 2014
    Video Rai.TV – Sanremo 2014 – Perturbazione – ‘L’ unica’ – Sanremo 2014
    Video Rai.TV – Sanremo 2014 – Giusy Ferreri – ‘Ti porto a cena con me’- Sanremo 2014

Giusy gave a great performance.Arisa was very solid and probably the one to beat from heat 1.Shel probably top the televote from these and should be jury bait come Saturday. However her song just lacks a bit.Where are the backing singers?More life please Arisa Saturday. It could hang on what the big hitters have in semi 2.Noemi and Francesco Renga are the other two who should get high televotes.Wel know better after tonight.

  8. Looks like Emma is going to be a special guest at the German final.

It will be a good chance to see her perform the song within a well produced setting.
Emma hasnt really done much to promote the song at all yet.She seems to of been too busy with everything else apart from ESC.It will be interesting to see if she starts to put some effort in and try to get the song and staging right.

  9. Germany vs. Italy at Bwin. 1.95 for Italy seems solid, yes?

    • Iv taken that Archi.Emma needs to learn to stage for ESC not an encore at one of her concerts but she is a class act.I like the German girls but youd have to expect Emma to beat them as long as she sorts out the staging.Im expecting a good show from her so 1.95 is very generous.
They gave me £82,so not sure if im limited or its a general limit.

    • too tight to call imo. both have their merits. there is very little for the rock crowd to vote for so Italy will stand out, but the German number is catchy, quirky and has proved it’s resilience already. perhaps it will come down to running order?

  10. If current odds are any indication as to how they are expected to do then italy is clearly the favourite. top10 odds are Italy: 2,24 and Germany 5,2. Italy is also higher in The Big Poll 2014 (although polls dont really matter that much). Anyway, I don’t see it being a bad bet however you look at it.

I dont know about the limits Durham, I was treading cautisouly with 80€ bet which they took, and I went back to put some more once you told me you’ve taken that as well (Yeah, I need someone to encourage me :p), but they changed it to 1,8 already :/

  11. Italy NOT to be in top-10 1.72 at 888, Unibet and PAF. I have had a nibble at all three.

  12. On to 2015,

    http://eurofestivalnews.com/2014/03/07/arisa-alleurovision-mi-piacerebbe-moltissimo/

Arisa (this years Sanremo winner) has said that shed love to represent Italy at ESC.

Its quite ironic that Emma robbed Arisa at Sanremo back in 2012 when “La Notte” should probably of won. Then Emma robs Arisa from going to ESC when “Controvento” wins this years Sanremo and was far superior to La Mia Città.

Sanremo 2015 is likely to be one of the strongest for years. The big artists looking to return are at the top of their games.Arisa wont be there as they never return the next year.So for Arisa to get the ticket theyd need to choose outside Sanremo again. Will they after this years failure?

Arisa is a wonderful artist and top drawer but im not sure shes right for ESC.She is typical high brow/high class Sanremo fodder though.

Warner Music will be pushing for Arisa or Annalisa Scarrone,(their biggest acts).Sony (Emma) and Universal (Zilli/Mengoni) have had the last three bites of the cherry so its likely next year will be a Warner artist.

I dont care who wins next years ESC if Annalisa gets the Italian ticket that is my ESC season made.

  13. http://eurofestivalnews.com/2014/06/12/annalisa-leurovision-song-contest-ci-andrei-corsa/

And there we go.Annalisa as well.Shes told Warner shed love to do ESC.So thats two of Warners biggest artists being pushed forward.Annalisa also won the OGAE Italy vote late last year and has their support (telling she won the international jury and televote in it).Thats always a big pointer.RAI have a tight budget for next year according to rumours so it looks like they maybe want Warner on board.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out considering the points raised in Gavs great article on the ESC album royalties spat.If the EBU want to keep Italy in the contest they need to sort out those issues asap as RAI rely on the labels.
